In this article I’m going to show you a quick guide on how to change the drive letters on Windows 7. All the Windows users know that the drive letters in this Operating System are assigned automaticaly. There are 26 letters used by Windows to apply them on drives, starting from A to Z. The letter A is always assigned to the floppy drive and the B letter is also reserved if there is another floppy drive. Starting from letter C to Z they are all reserved for the hard drives, partitions, but with exception that the C letter is always assigned to the partition where Windows is installed, so you cannot assign it to other partitions.
Notice: In this article I’m going to describe the steps how to change the drive letters only in Windows 7, but these steps are completely the same if you want to change the drive letters in Windows XP.
1. Go to Computer (in your Windows 7 desktop or from Start), right-click on it and select Manage.

2. The Computer Management window will appear in front. From the tree list in the left, under Storage select Disk Management.
3. The partitions will appear in the middle section of the Computer Management window. Go to the desired partition, right-click on it and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
4. A dialog windows will appear asking you to Add, Change or Remove drive letters, so you click on Change button.
5. You are now at the final step. As you can see in the picture below, the dialog window asks you to assign the desired drive letter which you can do by clicking on the combo list on the right which gives you all the letters. So assing the letter you want to the previously selected drive (partition) and click Ok.
Once again, if you want to change drive letters on Windows XP, it is completely the same method as in Windows 7.
